To Stornoway and Back

The lure of the Proclaimers at the ‘Heb Fest’ ensured a good LBSC contingent headed across the Minch,  and while about it take part in the open race on the final day of Sail Hebrides, a week of sailing organised by the Stornoway Sailing Club.

“I hear LBSC are going to be here tonight”
First off the mark was Lucky Jim (Andy and Karen) followed by Twister (John, Shona and Jill) and Mollymawk (Paul, joined in Stornoway by Kate). Thursday night at Tanera Beg, departing in good time in Friday with a fresh northerly enabling a fast if lumpy passage; The Vegas were followed by Seonaid (Sandy, Lisa and Shaun) and Hestur (Dan and stag party revellers).

The port was full and we were directed to tie alongside pier two by the friendly and helpful harbour staff;  John O “ where is pier 2?” Harbourmaster; “between pier one and pier 3?”

A lazy Saturday Morning – Ulla had been shipped across with Bev and Kathleen. Sadly Stornoway’s boat was crewless so limited racing challenges.  No shortage of boats for the ‘Bermudan Challenge’ (Did Hestur qualify?) a dash from the harbour round Chicken Rock and back some 10 miles, sadly no Twister who had to be in Ullapool in good time on Sunday so headed back on Saturday afternoon.

Drama after rounding Chicken Rock with the wind freshening from 5 to 6 and perhaps more; one of the Stornoway boats lost a mast! No further harm – the lifeboat was on the scene in no time at all; boat, mast and crew all safely returned.  And the race Seonaid bagged 3rd, but perhaps honours should go to Twister for a record breaking passage back across the Minch.

After a noisy Saturday night the fleet headed west on Sunday –  Force 4 to 5 dead astern, not comfortable (strange crew/figurehead spotted on Hestur) – Tanera Beg and a fantastic reach back to Ullapool on Monday.
