Freedom FF 2366

As gift horses go, what could be better than a free Flying Fifteen, courtesy a retired dentist from Stirling who saw an ad we placed in the FF website for donations of spare gear to "an impoverished Highland sailing club".

The result was this classic FF, built by Shepherds in 1970 or thereabouts, with cover and good trailer, now residing at the club. She needs a little TLC in the form of gelcoat repairs at two places along the gunwale (port and starboard incidents no doubt). There's a bearing going in the hub, but otherwise a sound trailer, and low slung for ease of recovery.

The hull is fair and unpainted, so will need priming and antifouling for next season. The rig seems fine, and she comes with the usual collection of oldish sails and spinnakers.

She will be a huge improvement on the old club boats, and will if pointed in the right direction, be competitive.

She will need someone to take charge of her week to week, and Dave Maxwell's name springs to mind. He's had more experience than most recently fixing broken bits, re-reeving halyards and generally trying to keep the old Red boat afloat. Gill deserves better too, after an incident this year when, on untying the tiller, it fell off (followed soon afterwards by the rudder which is now lying on the sea bed).

There may be a case for retiring Red along with Black, and using them as spares... thoughts please.
