Pico Week Quick Report by Dave Maxwell

Hi All,
Another successful Junior sailing week with 16 participants enjoying the predictable Ullapool weather - everything from flat calm to F4, from all points of the compass and from glorious sunshine to heavy rain.  Despite this, we managed to get on the water and do two full sessions each day.

We had 3 first time sailors, 1 new visitor, 2 returnees from a few years back  and the rest sailed last year.  As before, we grouped the beginners in the morning and practised reaching, tacking and capsize drill in-shore while the more experienced went out in the afternoon beyond the yachts and practised triangle sailing, speed control, man-over-board  and even did some racing.

Rob, our Snr RYA instructor did a fantastic job both with the instructing and also engaging with all of the children.  Emma was also a great help on the first day.

We had one minor injury (boom strike just below the helmet during unintended jybe) and one major mechanical issue with the RIB when the steering cable failed.  Many thanks to Chris Steventon for diagnosing the problem and fitting the new cable the next day.

Thanks also for Paul D, Anthony, Alison and Bobby for their tireless efforts in the Safety Boats,  Adrian for loaning his motor boat at the last minute, Alison again for organising the BBQ on Friday and the other parents for providing shore cover and generally pitching in.
Lessons / observations for next year:

- Definitely use helmets for the beginners - thanks to Anthony and Kinlochbervie School for the loan

- Definitely have 2 boats - even if the 2nd isn't a safety boat, its invaluable as backup, for ferrying cold children back and for providing additional coaching on the water.

- Review the RIB: this needs to be very reliable.  Should we replace the steering console and motor?  Or perhaps replace the whole boat before it gets too old?

- Should we invest in a club tender / back-up boat?

- The large, distinctive sailing marks worked well - I'll ask Steven if we can keep them for the summer...
