Curry Night and Race Training

Fired up by a selection of superb curries (Donald's South African number won the "First to be Hoovered Up" Prize) Friday's curry night went down well, enlivened later by a slightly disjointed, amusing, irreverent, totally non-PC at times, diversive, inspiring and ultimately enjoyable talk by John Simpson, small boat sailor, Yachtmaster Examiner, racing skipper, former master of the pilot cutter Jolie Brise and one-time bomb disposal officer (which we don't mention) from Essex (which wasn't his fault).

Next day after a late start he ran an hour's classroom session before putting the Flying Fifteen fleet through its paces with a series of closely-fought starts followed by an al fresco question and answer session.

What did we learn?

1. Sail setting
2. Balance
3. Trim
4. Course to steer

"How wonderful to see such a small sailing club racing actively. Just keep getting afloat," says John who clearly enjoyed himself. "But don't get too hung up on the latest equipment. Just make the most of the boats you have. You'll find they've a lot more potential. It's the boat's crew that matters most."

"He went down a storm," was the concensus from the Usual Suspects propping up the Royal's bar that evening.
