Regatta Report and Flying Fifteen Handicaps

Saturday's racing was a tale of two halves: hardly enough breeze to fill an Osborne spinnaker in the morning, and blowing old boots in the afternoon. The club was buzzing throughout the weekend and we even managed to persuade confirmed skiffettes Fiona and Bev to step aboard a Flying Fifteen.

Lots of kids in Picos and a real buzz about the place. Good barbecues and booze too.

I'll let others contribute their own recollections, as my memory is failing and only registers when Ffly does well. Alas, her winning days are numbered. Not before time, I hear you mutter. Time to polish my bottom and break out the new sails...

Now that the Osbornes are finally up to speed (took them long enough) and in order to avoid family feuds, here is the handicap system that ensures fair results between the Classic fleet (three club boats plus Alastair’s, Nabbie’s, John’s and Paul’s); Silver fleet (Ffly) and Sandy’s  Open, or Modern Ovington 9.

Forgive my maths, so do check the figures those of a mathematical bent.

HANDICAP SYSTEM
BIFFA define the Classic Fleet as being for boats below sail number 2700, plus boats built by Wyche and Coppock and Copland/McIntosh with sail numbers higher than this, but using the old shape hull. Silver Fleet boats run from sail number 2700 to 3200 with the exception of those eligible for Classic racing.

Classic boats sail under a Portsmouth yardstick (PY) number of 1049: Silver Fleet boats sail off 1037, while Modern boats use the RYA 2011 PY of 1024.

Scoring a race
In order to score a handicap race corrected times need to be calculated from a boat’s elapsed time (time taken to sail the course). This is achieved by using the formula below.

Calculation of corrected times for race results

Corrected Time (C) = Elapsed Time (ET) x 1000 divided by PY

(All times in seconds, any decimals are rounded to the nearest whole figure with a decimal of 0.5 and above rounded up and less than 0.5 down)

Example
That means, in a race that takes a Modern boat 39 minutes; Silver 40 minutes and Classic 41 minutes elapsed time, the corrected times would be:

Boat           PY               Elapsed (ET)        Corrected time (CT)
Modern       1024            2340                     2285 (1)
Silver           1037            2400                     2314 (2)
Classic        1049            2460                     2345 (3)

Modern wins over Silver by 29 seconds and over Classic by 60 seconds (CT)

Example
If all boats finished together the results of a 40 minute race would be:

Boat            PY              Elapsed                Corrected
Modern       1024           2400                     2343 (3)
Silver           1037           2400                     2314 (2)
Classic        1049           2400                     2288 (1)

Classic wins over Silver by 26 seconds and over Modern by 55 seconds (CT)

Example
In a race lasting around 60 minutes Modern has to beat Classic by  around 90 secs (ET) to save her time and around 47 seconds to beat Silver.

Boat                     PY              ET              CT
Modern                1024            3686           3600
Silver                    1037           3733           3600
Classic                  1049           3776           3600

Example
In a race where Modern’s ET is 40 minutes (2400 secs) and Classic is 18 seconds astern (2418) and Silver is 12 seconds (2430) behind Classic the result (rounded up and down to the nearest second) would be:

Boat            PY              ET                        CT
Modern       1024           2400                     2344 (3)
Classic        1049           2418                     2304 (1)
Silver          1037           2430                     2342 (2)
