Snipe Cup 2: The Crews' Respond

When Rona won the Snipe Cup for her jib trimming on Ffly, she represented all the unsung crew who make the difference between winning a race and coming last.

How a cup awarded in Dover in the 1930s came to LBSC is unclear, but they are working on it.

As luck would have it, there is a big Snipe regatta in Orkney on 2 August and Sarah will be passing through en route.

Meanwhile here is the recent exchange between Rona and Sarah Mees, Snipe aficionado and fellow crew.

Dear Rona
Thank you so much for your email. From one crew to another, the cup is well-deserved!

Thank you also for your kind invitation if any Snipe sailors find their way North. You will be interested to know that a whole fleet of Snipes are making their way North for the British Nationals which take place in ~Orkney this year 2-4th August! Personally I will be travelling either side of those dates. The Scottish connection is becoming more meaningful by the day. They have 2 fleets in Orkney - Stromness and Holm. My husband and I visited several times in the early 90's and can 't wait to go back. If we are travelling that far, I am sure a short detour to Loch Broom Sailing Club would not be too difficult. Again in the early 90's my husband and I went to Finland by road, and did a short detour of 160 miles so that we could cross the Arctic Circle, and then do some Snipe sailing back ion Finland, so we have history for doing this sort of thing.

I will of course keep you posted of any news about the cup's travels, and thank once again. Just so you know, I am not a member of RCPYC, my alleigance has remained with Erith Yacht Club, although we have lived in Dover for a few years now. I am also not a "trophy hunter", just someone really interested in the history and people side of Snpe sailing and it's wider connections.
Many thanks again
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

Donald Buchanan kindly forwarded your e-mail to Adrian and I. That this cup has found its way to Ullapool is indeed surprising – and it would be great to map its journey north.

Adrian (skipper) and I (humble crew) race his Flying Fifteen, Ffly, with the club here on Loch Broom. Ffly has been on a winning streak for a while and for the 2012 season the club, bored with awarding the FF trophy (which is not necessarily the Snipe Cup) to Adrian slid it sideways, as it were, to his crew – under the quaintly democratic pretext that the trim of the jib can make or break a race. Thus, I've become the proud, temporary custodian of this very smart Snipe Cup. Curious about its origins, Adrian did a little digging, and the rest you know from the blog and Adrian's e-mail.

If you find out more, do please let us know and we'll do the same.

And should you or any of your fellow Snipes find your way north, the Loch Broom Sailing Club would make you very welcome.

Wishing you well with your 80-year celebrations (impressive!),

All best,

Rona
